• Visible crumbling at cut edges where pavers meet the house. HardieBacker is edge-sensitive; factory edges are sealed, field cuts are not. In Walnut Creek’s climate, with 20-25 annual days above 90°F, thermal cycling opens micro-cracks that let moisture into the core.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can check safely: lift one paver at the edge with a flat pry bar and a piece of cardboard to protect the surface. If the HardieBacker beneath is dark, crumbles when you press a screwdriver tip into it, or smells musty, it’s done. Note the thickness and any stamped markings.

Where DIY goes wrong: HardieBacker 500 weighs 2.6 pounds per square foot - a 4×8 sheet is 83 pounds, and you’re working at ground level with limited clearance. More critically, the vapor barrier beneath must lap correctly with wall flashing, and the bedding sand needs compaction in two lifts with a plate compactor.
